University of Maryland School of Medicine
Faculty Mentoring
Oversight
Each Department within the School of Medicine will designate a senior faculty member as the Mentoring Coordinator. This individual will be responsible for pairing Mentors and mentees and for monitoring the success of the mentoring relationship. Mentoring Coordinators from other departments will serve as a resource for advice and suggestions, especially when the department lacks faculty with appropriate scientific expertise.
All Mentors and mentees will fill out a brief survey via email after the first 6 months of the relationship and annually thereafter. If the relationship is not felt to be productive, then the Mentoring Coordinator will provide constructive input to the Mentor and/or mentee and will take other action as appropriate. Both Mentor and mentee will be encouraged to contact the Mentoring Coordinator at any time during the mentoring relationship to discuss in confidence any specific difficulties or issues.
The progress and productivity of the Mentoring program at the School of Medicine level will be overseen by a committee comprised of the Mentoring Coordinators from each Department. This committee will meet under the aegis of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.. The committee will formally review the program annually, including a statistical analysis of outcomes that measure the success of mentees, such as acquisition of research funding and the publication of research in peer-reviewed journals. The Mentoring Committee will meet periodically and formulate recommendations for modifications of the program.
