University of Maryland School of Medicine
Faculty Mentoring
Mission
Success of young faculty in the current research climate depends upon the development of many diverse skills. Unfortunately, many of the required skills are not provided in formal education or training programs. Neglected skills include grant preparation, manuscript writing, personnel and financial management, establishing effective collaborative and other working relationships (networking), and balancing academic requirements with personal obligations. The most efficient and effective mechanism through which these skills can be provided is by mentoring. Effective mentoring provides an opportunity for established faculty to directly enable the careers of mentees through political and scientific means and thereby enhances the caliber of research throughout the School of Medicine.
