About Us

The Maryland Regional Community Network (MRCN) - is an NCI supported Community Network Program (CNP) which draws from two developmental networks in Maryland: the Statewide Health Network (supported by the Cigarette Restitution Fund Program) and NCI supported Maryland Special Populations Cancer Research Network.

 

The Maryland CNP infrastructure is comprised of: Central Headquarters at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, eight geographic and community subcontractors, and one academic partner covering all geographic areas and underserved communities in the state. 

 

Program Goals

 

There are two overall goals whic guide the research, outreach and education, policy research and analysis, and training:

 

Goal A: To significantly improve access to and utilization of beneficial cancer control interventions in Maryland Communities which experience cancer health disparities.

 

Goal B: To develop a cadre of well-trained researchers.

Specific Aims

The aims for the CNP Program support the cross cutting, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary community-based participatory research (CBPR), community education and outreach, policy and training activities.  These aims guide the methods and activities of this Community Network Program and are the following:

 

Specific Aim 1: To develop a robust and sustainable community based statewide and regional infrastructure which fosters enhanced community capacity in  

 

Specific Aim 2: To foster, conduct and apply results of culturally relevant and appropriate community-based participatory research and evidence-based community education and outreach on cancer health disparities

 

Specific Aim 3: To develop and implement training programs consistent with the overall goals of this CNP, which will result in an increased cadre of well-trained and culturally sensitive cancer health disparity researchers;

 

Specific Aim 4: To foster sustainability and credibility of this CNP; and

 

Specific Aim 5: To leverage and foster additional resources and policies to support CNP research, education and outreach, and policy formulation.
