Eliot L. Siegel, MD
Dr. Siegel, is a professor and Vice Chair of Imaging Informatics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is also Chief of Imaging Services for the Maryland VA Healthcare System at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. He holds adjunct appointments as a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and as a professor of bioengineering at the University of Maryland College Park. He is a distinguished imaging informatics expert and most recently served as Workspace Lead for NCI’s caBIG In Vivo Imaging Workspace, with additional oversight responsibility for the NCI National Cancer Image Archive. Under his leadership, the VA Maryland Healthcare system became the first filmless health care enterprise in the world. He is a fellow of the American College of Radiology and of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine and is a frequently invited speaker on imaging informatics topics. He has been named both Radiology Researcher of the Year and Radiology Educator of the Year by his international peers.His areas of interest and responsibility at both the local and national levels include digital imaging and PACS, telemedicine, the electronic medical record, informatics, and artificial intelligence systems.
Christopher Meenan, BS
Cofounder, Director of Operations
Mr. Meenan is a research faculty member and director of IT for the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. As director of information services for the department, he oversaw installation of all PACS and other information systems at Maryland and served as operational director of the IT group. He has overseen software development at each of the hospitals for which Maryland provides imaging services and directed the internationally recognized team of developers and IT specialists who make up RadIT at Maryland. He lectures widely on topics in radiology IT integration and is a member of the board of directors of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine. Trained and experienced as a systems engineer, Mr. Meenan is completing an MBA from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. In addition to directing MIRTL operations and initiatives, he directs commercialization efforts for lab members and affiliates.
Joseph Jen-Sho Chen, MD
Cofounder, Director of Research
Dr. Chen is a board-certified radiologist and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. He has collaborated with Dr. Siegel and other members of the radiology department on imaging informatics, cardiac, trauma and other projects. He has been the lead on several collaborative and funded projects, including projects with NIST and NIBIB. He has successfully taken the lead in preparing numerous funding applications, has made numerous imaging informatics–based presentations and published more than 25 peer-reviewed articles.
Nancy Knight, PhD
Cofounder, Director of Academic and Research Development
Dr. Knight is an assistant professor and director of academic and research development in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. Within MIRTL she works to identify new projects, partnerships, and research funding; advance presentation and publication of scientific results; and guide forward-looking laboratory planning. She was the PI of the caBIG Imaging Knowledge Center, based at Maryland, and specializes in knowledge management, synthesis, and communication to a range of stakeholders, including patients and caregivers. She is an experienced medical writer/editor with 30 years’ experience in radiology and imaging environments.
