MIRTL Overview

The Maryland Imaging Research Technologies Laboratory (MIRTL) is directed by Eliot Siegel, MD. It is a confederation of academic clinicians, research scientists, imaging informatics specialists, developers and support staff working in a flexible, dedicated laboratory environment to advance strategies, tools, and collaborations for:

• Novel approaches to research in medical imaging, especially research across previous geographic, institutional, and technical barriers;
• Innovations that will make medical imaging a productive, integral part of the electronic medical record of the future;
• Innovations that can provide standardization in both IT and other technologies (including radiation-emitting devices) to enhance patient care and safety, improve outcomes, and streamline comparability for quality and research efforts;
• Practical applications that can enhance secure image data and associated information sharing among health care providers, researchers, and patients;
• Creative outreach efforts to improve communication and collaboration between health care professionals and the public to advance patient-centered research and associated improved outcomes; and
• Community investigation, definition, and consensus on cutting-edge topics at the intersection of imaging practice and new technologies (e.g., meaningful use, comparative effectiveness topics, lower dose imaging approaches).
