RESEARCH INTERESTS
Mechanisms, clinical characteristics and consequences of fever and its treatment.
Dr. Mackowiak studies mechanisms, clinical characteristics and consequences of fever and its treatment. He has edited two editions of a monograph devoted to fever. His research has provided the first modern characterization of normal temperature in humans. He and his collaborators, have also published the most comprehensive description of the clinical characteristics of drug-induced fever, characterized the effects of physiological variations in temperature on bacteria growth and susceptibility, studied the relationship between the height of fever and the severity of the infections causing fever, examined the effect of interferon ß on regional cerebral blood flow, and demonstrated prolongation of illness due to experimental influenza A by antipyretic therapy. He is currently conducting an investigation to identify mechanisms responsible for diurnal fluctuations in fever during bacterial endocarditis.
