RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Harris is a practicing infectious disease physician and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. He is also the Associate Hospital Epidemiologist for the University of Maryland Medical System. Dr. Harris's research interests include emerging pathogens, antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, infection control interventions, epidemiologic methods in infectious diseases and medical informatics. His current research projects involve the use of relational databases at the UMMS and databases from other institutions in the United States. Projects using these databases include: a) risk factor analyses of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria b) electronic collection and subsequent molecular analysis of resistant mechanisms of multi-resistant antimicrobial-resistant bacteria c) use of the databases to improve/automate infection control d) methodological issues in case-control studies of antimicrobial resistance. He currently has an NIH career development award. In addition, he is involved in a NIH-funded multi-center case-crossover study analyzing risk factors for sharps-related injuries.
