RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Gilliam's research interests focus on the role of HIV-1 in genital secretions, particularly semen. Previously, this has included evaluating viral burden in semen by RNA assays and quantitative cultures. Changes in semen viral burden with initiation of antiretroviral therapy, presence of a sexually transmitted disease, and primary infection have been investigated. The current focus is to develop an understanding of the natural history of HIV-1 in genital secretions and what factors may correlate with transmission. This includes further evaluations of the effects of antiretroviral drugs, STD's, and early infection on viral burden in genital secretions as well as the role of HIV-1 in genital secretions of discordant couples. It also includes the evaluation of correlates of immunity through the investigation of the virology and immunology of HIV-1 in genital secretions.
