Reporting Animal Concerns
It is the policy of the University of Maryland School of Medicine that ALL animals used for research, teaching or other activities receive the best possible care.
Individuals can report any concerns regarding animal procedures and/or animal care to the IACUC via the following methods: telephone contact followed by written documentation, email or written correspondence. The OAWA prefers that the initial contact be made via telephone so that the appropriate action can be taken immediately to ensure the well-being of the animal(s) in question. Subsequently, a written description of the concern should be submitted for further action. Anonymity of the individual initiating the concern will be respected, if requested and if possible.
All animal concerns should be reported to one of the following:
- Office of Animal Welfare Assurance: 410-706-4365
- Veterinary Resources: 410-706-3540 (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or 443-835-9841 (nights, weekends or holidays)
- UMB Ethics Point: 866-594-5220
Whistleblower Protection: It is University policy [UM Policies: USM VIII-7.11; UMB VIII 7.11(B); & UMB VIII 7.11(C)] to prohibit any discriminatory or retaliatory action against any UM personnel reporting known or reasonably suspected wrongdoing. UM personnel include administrative and academic officers, faculty, employees, fellows, students, volunteers or any person in the public who interacts with UM.
Help assure the humane care and use of laboratory animals.
