Personal History:

Mark D. Macek, DDS, DrPH is an Associate Professor in the Division of Health Services Research, Department of Health Promotion and Policy, University of Maryland Dental School. Dr. Macek is a board certified specialist in dental public health with a notable record of health disparities investigations. In 1996, he began his research career as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer with the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. While with NCHS, Dr. Macek studied the risk factors associated with infrequent dental care utilization and poor oral health status among the nationâ?Ts children and adults.

In 1998, he began his academic career at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, focusing his attention on oral health disparities in the state. He is currently leading a follow-up assessment of Maryland's school children to be launched in the fall. Most recently, Dr. Macek has distinguished himself as one of the first researchers to explore the links between health literacy and oral health status among adults. Working in collaboration with Dr. Kathryn Atchison from the UCLA School of Dentistry, Dr. Macek will lead a multidisciplinary team of researchers from Emory University, the University of Baltimore, and the University of Maryland at College Park. This R01 investigation will be the second health literacy grant awarded to him by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Macek has authored more than 30 manuscripts and two textbook chapters relating to health disparities and dental public health. He is a member of the editorial board for Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology. He also is a member of NIDCRâ?Ts Data Safety Monitoring Board.
