Research Interests:

Dr. Mehra sub-specializes in the field of advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation. He has published more than 350 articles on advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation, including various treatment modalities and alternatives to transplantation. His specific research interests in cardiac transplantation focus on post-transplant coronary arterial disease, new immunosuppressive therapy to improve heart transplant outcomes, and bringing genomic and proteomic science (the study of protein interactions in the body) to the bedside. In the field of heart failure, his research has focused on the role of new devices and novel serum markers (BNP) to guide diagnosis and therapy.

Dr. Mehra holds several international leadership positions, including his service on the board of directors of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the education committee of the Heart Failure Society of America and as Chair of the Thoracic Committee of the American Society of Transplantation. Additionally, he serves as an associate editor for four prestigious academic journals, including the American Journal of Transplantation, Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Journal of Cardiac Failure and the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, and as an editorial consultant for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Specific Research Interests:
• Intravascular ultrasound and Intracoronary angioscopy analysis for cardiac allograft vasculopathy in heart transplantation
• Novel immunosuppression strategies to enhance survival in African-American heart transplant recipients and address renal dysfunction post transplant
• Molecular gene expression diagnostics for detection of rejection and prediction of outcomes in heart transplantation
• Percutaneous Continuous Aortic Flow Augmentation in advanced heart failure
• Biomarkers in heart failure and transplantation (BNP) and cardiopulmonary stress testing in heart failure.
• Development of international guidelines for the care of the heart transplant candidate and process enhancement for improving performance measure adherence in heart failure
