Personal History

Dr. Calia is Vice Dean of Clinical Affairs for the School of Medicine, the Theodore E. Woodward Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine, and Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Microbiology & Immunology.

He is a graduate of Harvard University and a cum laude graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Boston City Hospital, and residency and fellowship in infectious diseases at the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital. He served in the United States Army at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Fort Detrick and attained the rank of major.

Dr. Calia joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty in 1969 and was appointed chief, Section of Infectious Diseases, Baltimore VA Medical Center. He rose through the ranks to professor of medicine and microbiology & immunology, and chief of Medical Service at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. He served as Vice Chair of Medicine and Director of Education in Internal Medicine from 1984-1992. Dr. Calia has been Interim Chairman of Medicine three times: 1981-1984, 1997-1999 and from April until July of 2008, at which time he was awarded the Chairmanship. He has also served as the Interim Chair for the Departments of  Ophthalmology, Radiation Oncology and Diagnostic Radiology.

He was appointed Vice Dean in the School of Medicine in 1992. Between 1979 and 1999, Dr. Calia was honored by the medical students with 21 teaching awards, both Golden Apple and Teacher of the Year Awards. He has also been awarded Teacher of the Year by the Maryland Higher Education Council (representing all colleges and universities in Maryland) and Teacher of the Year by the University System of Maryland.

Dr. Calia's major interests are in infectious disease, bacterial diarrhea, vibrio infections, staphylococcal infections and clinical pharmacology.
