Research Interests

Dr. Mona Baumgarten received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill Uni-versity in Montreal, Canada. She was on the faculty of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Montreal for two years, and in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania for five years, before coming to the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 1998.

Dr. Baumgarten’s major research interest is in the epidemiology of aging. Before leaving Canada to move to the U.S., most of her work was on the epidemiology of dementia, including studies of the impact of dementia on caregiver health and burden. More recently, Dr. Baumgarten’s interests have expanded to include research on the prevention of pressure ulcers in vulnerable populations. She has received two R01 grants and one R21 grant from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Arthritis Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to study pressure ulcers in elderly hospital patients. She has published several papers reporting results of research on pressure ulcer incidence and risk factors, as well as papers interpreting epidemiologic methods for clinical audiences in the area of wound care. Dr. Baumgarten is currently developing a large epidemiologic project on racial disparities in relation to parkinsonian signs, health services utilization, and disability among residents of senior housing in Baltimore. Dr. Baumgarten is a coursemaster for Principles of Epidemiology, the introductory epidemiology course offered in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine. The objective of the course is to introduce the students to the concepts, methods, and applications of epidemiology. She has had extensive experience in mentoring trainees in multiple areas, with an emphasis on research methodology.
