Research Interests:

Dr. Mona Baumgarten received her MSc and PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She was on the faculty of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Montreal for two years, and in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania for five years, before coming to the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1998.

Dr. Baumgarten’s major research interest is in the epidemiology of aging. She began her career with work on the epidemiology of dementia, including studies of the impact of dementia on caregiver health and burden. Dr. Baumgarten also has an interest in research on the prevention of pressure ulcers in vulnerable populations. She has received two R01 grants and one R21 grant from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Arthritis Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to study pressure ulcers in elderly hospital patients. Dr. Baumgarten is currently Director of the Data Coordinating Center for an NIA-funded multicenter clinical trial comparing two exercise interventions for the rehabilitation of older adults following hip fracture. She has also developed an interest in the benefits and risks of resuming oral anticoagulation medication following serious injury in older adults with atrial fibrillation.

Dr. Baumgarten is a coursemaster for Principles of Epidemiology, the introductory epidemiology course offered by the Program in Epidemiology and Human Genetics. She has had extensive experience in mentoring trainees in multiple clinical and nonclinical areas, with an emphasis on research methodology.

R01 AG035009 (PI: J. Magaziner) (09/1/10-08/31/15)
NIH/NIA
Community Ambulation Following Hip Fracture
This multicenter randomized controlled trial will evaluate the effect of a 16-week home-based muti-component intervention on the ability to ambulate independently in the community among older men and women who have sustained a hip fracture. The study also will investigate the effect of the intervention on precursors to community ambulation and the cost-effectiveness of delivering the program to this frail and disabled population of older persons.
Role: Co-Investigator (Director of Data Coordinating Center)

R21 AG042768 (PI: I. Zuckerman) (08/1/12-07/31/14)
NIH/NIA
Long-Term Anticoagulation Therapy After Traumatic Brain Injury in Older Adults
Anticoagulant (AC) medication use in older adults carries with it both risks and benefits. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the balance of beneficial outcomes (prevention of thromboembolism) and adverse outcomes (hemorrhage) associated with early resumption, delayed resumption, or no resumption of AC therapy after a TBI. The results of this study will support creation of evidence-based guidelines for improving the management of the increasing problem of TBI in older adults, especially those with coexisting conditions that require anticoagulation.
Role: Co-Investigator
