1996: Ph.D. in Immunobiology of Viruses, School of Medicine, University of Pisa, Italy

Research Interests:

Immunology and Immunotherapy Program within the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center Program in Oncology. Dr. Currel's research centers on the mechanisms of lymphoma development in association with infectious agents. Current projects include:

The role of Mycoplasma in lymphoma genesis.

A major finding in this project is that a strain of Mycoplasma Fermentans induces lymphoma in SCID mice. Dr. Curreli studies the molecular mechanism of transformation with particular emphasis on Mycoplasma's proteins that cause deregulation of the p53 pathway.

Role of HIV in lymphoma genesis.

In collaboration with the IHV animal facility Dr. Curreli is characterizing lymphoma development in HIV transgenic mice. She also studies the role of HIV proteins in dysregulation of different aspects of immunity.
