Research Interests

I have two research interests. The first is focused on the epidemiology of pathogenic and drug-resistant bacteria. Bacterial infectious diseases are reemerging as a major clinical problem. Our understanding of bacteria is changing as we learn to differentiate within and between species. This provides the power to examine epidemiology of infectious disease in a greater detail. We are studying the role of lateral gene transfer and the epidemiological spread of Vibrio cholerae, and transmission of MRSA in hospitals and communities. In addition, we are testing the hypothesis that non-culture methods of analyzing diarrhea stools from patients in third-world countries that do not have a microbiological diagnosis will identify previously unknown pathogens.

My second area of research interest is genotyping individuals in order to establish correlations between clinical phenotypes like early onset stroke (<50 years old). schizophrenia and single-nucleotide polymorphisms.
