Research Interests
We studied the structure function relationships in hemoglobin. The research is multifaceted and involves all the technologies of protein isolation, purification, peptide analyses and amino acid sequences. This in turn includes measurements of binding of oxygen, carbon monoxyde, cyanide and other ligands to hemoglobin and myoglobin. It also include measurements of molecular weight, molecular radius, optical characteristics (CD, absorption), fluorescence emission. One of the ultimate goals is to transform hemoglobin into a cell-free oxygen carrier to be used in transfusional fluids. A new field of study has been opened using fluorescence with time resolution in the picosecond range, namely the interactions of heme with the respective protein in hemoglobin and myoglobin.
