Personal History

I graduated from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania. I subsequently did my residency in anesthesiology at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia University, in New York City which was followed by two years of fellowship training in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia at Duke University. During my second year at Duke, I obtained a Masters Degree in Health Sciences and Clinical Research. After completion of my fellowship, I worked for seven years at the Texas Heart Institute where I gained clinical expertise in cardiac, vascular and thoracic anesthesiology and I served as one of the Operating Room Directors. I have developed a Cardiovascular Anesthesia Echocardiography program at the Texas Heart Institute. Under my supervision, over 22 cardiovascular anesthesiology fellows and staff members became certified by the National Board of Echocardiography. After Texas Heart Institute, I worked at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona where I served as Curriculum Director for residents on the cardiac anesthesia rotation. I joined the Department as Director of Division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology in 2010.

My research areas of interest in neuroprotection and in heart failure have been supported by several local, regional and industry grants.

Research Interests

One of my areas of interest is related to myocardial structural changes in end-stage heart failure and to the impact of ventricular unloading, provided by left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), on alpha and beta adrenoreceptors density and distribution. Following ventricular decompression, by probing of the adrenoreceptors with fluorescent probes, we found a profound increase in betaAR number, a slight increase in alpha AR number and a change from a "clumped" pattern of receptor distribution to a very homogeneous appearance throughout the tissue samples.  Moreover, myofibrils from pre-LVAD samples (Panels A and B) showed a more disorganized and disrupted pattern associated with a perivascular distribution of ARs. In contrast, paired post-LVAD tissue samples (Panels C and D) revealed long, intact and organized myofibrils with a homogenous intra-myocytic distribution of AR.  An overall improvement in physical state of the myocardial tissue was noted in post-LVAD samples.

Another area of interest is related to neuroprotection during cardiac surgery. We found that mild hypothermia and slow rewarming rate is associated with better neurocognitive outcomes particularly in diabetic cardiac surgical patients.

Clinical Speciality
