Dr. Atkins completed her undergraduate degree at Davidson College. She went on to complete her medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia where she also completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She continued her training in Maternal Fetal Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. After a brief time on faculty at New York University School of Medicine, she joined the faculty here at University of Maryland. Her clinical interests include all aspects of high risk pregnancy management and prenatal diagnosis. She also has an interest in medical eduction at all levels. She currently serves and medical director of labor and delivery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She is committed to patient safety and quality improvement in caring for obstetric patients.
Dr. Atkins research interest include innovations in labor management, the unique properties of caring for the obese obstetric patient as well as diabetes care. She also has an interest in the changing environment of medical education and how we can better teach in today's environment.
She enjoys caring for pregnant women with diabetes, autoimmune disease and other complex medical conditions. She has a special interest in caring for women with invasive placentas.
