Dr. Morgan’s research explores pragmatic issues related to the control of infectious diseases in the hospital and patient safety. Recent work has focused on the best use of patient isolation, automated methods for hand hygiene compliance, prevention of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and overuse of medical care. Other expertise includes multidrug-resistant bacteria, the importance of the environment on transmission of bacteria, multicenter infection prevention studies and antimicrobial stewardship.

Dr. Morgan mentors residents, MD and PhD students, has advised the Department of Veterans Affairs appeals board, the Maryland Attorney General’s office and multiple hospitals. He lectures internationally and directs the Research Network for the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).
