Biosketch

Dr. Browne is internationally recognized as one of the pioneers of emergency medicine. In 1984, after becoming one of the first physicians in the United States to complete residency training in emergency medicine, Dr. Browne came to the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he was instrumental in turning a small emergency room operation into a clinical and educational program that is modeled around the world. The Department of Emergency Medicine now has 75 faculty members, including many of the top educators and clinicians in the specialty. The emergency medicine residency has more than 50 residents on its three tracks. Dr. Browne also developed the Maryland Emergency Medicine Network, which encompasses 14 EDs serving rural, suburban, and urban communities in Maryland, where 550,000 patients are assessed and treated every year. He was instrumental in the creation of Maryland ExpressCare, the critical care communications and transport service that enables community physicians anywhere in the state to consult with university-based specialists and transfer patients in need of specialty medical care to the medical center. More than 11,200 patients are transported by this program’s ambulances and helicopter each year, representing 25% of the medical center’s admissions. Dr. Browne is a popular speaker at professional forums in the U.S. and abroad, acknowledging his career and renown as a leading clinician, educator, and innovator in the specialty of emergency medicine.
