Biosketch

Dr. Michael Terrin is an internist with subspecialty certification in pulmonary medicine, and an MPH in epidemiology. Dr. Terrin has directed or been deputy director of Coordinating Centers for more than 25 studies with emphases on clinical trials and cohort studies. In 1979-1982, he held a cardiovascular epidemiology training grant at the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.

He led the Data Coordinating Center for the NHLBI-sponsored Multicenter Study of Hydroxyurea (MSH) in Sickle Cell Anemia and for the NHLBI-sponsored FOCUS clinical trial comparing transfusion strategies. He was responsible for the data coordination of a landmark study in pulmonary embolism (PIOPED) and for the portion of the first NHLBI-initiated thrombolytic agent clinical trials, TIMI I and TIMI II, that discovered t-PA’s dose and patient characteristic-dependent risk of cerebral hemorrhage in acute myocardial infarction.

He is currently contact and Data Coordinating Center (DCC) Principal Investigator for the NIA-sponsored Non-Invasive Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Clinical Trial (N-TA3CT), DCC Principal Investigator for the NICHD-sponsored Azithromycin to Prevent BPD in Ureaplasma-Infected Preterms (AZIP3), Principal Investigator for the NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium (PCBC) Administrative Coordinating Center and Principal Investigator for the NHLBI Progenitor Cell Translational Consortium (PCTC) Administrative Coordinating Center.

Dr. Terrin is co-Principal Investigator of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Core (Core 1) of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Older Americans Independence Center (Claude D. Pepper Center). Dr. Terrin has served in a mentorship capacity to associate professors and assistant professors who have established research independence.

Dr. Terrin is a faculty member in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Division of Gerontology, and on the Department’s training grant (T32) for the Epidemiology of Aging. Dr. Terrin as dedicated his career to the design, conduct and analysis of clinical investigations with an emphasis on coordinating center data functions.

Progenitor Cell Translational Consortium Coordinating Center (U24)

The Progenitor Cell Translational Consortium Administrative Coordinating Center (PCTC-ACC) will provide the administrative infrastructure needed to organize interactions and facilitate collaborations between PCTC investigators, oversee programs using set-aside funds to stimulate collaborative research and skills development, and enable the timely sharing of PCTC-generated data and reagents among PCTC investigators and with the research community. The PCTC-ACC will also facilitate access to expertise for preparation of FDA IND and IDE applications. [newly funded award].

Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium Administrative Coordinating Center

The Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium Administrative Coordinating Center will make available to the public accessible video reports on the research accomplishments of the Consortium, to the general scientific community reports and data from the Consortium that will advance their research on stem and progenitor cell related health problems and to the members of the Consortium data and meta-data from each other’s work to advance their collaborative research. In addition to providing all involved with newly developed, valuable information, the exchange of this information is expected to result in new therapeutic approaches that could shift paradigms and enormously improve outcomes of some of the most frequently fatal diseases in the U.S.

Non-Invasive Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Clinical Trial (N-TA3CT)

The primary aim of this multi-site clinical trial is to determine if doxycycline (100mg bid) will inhibit by at least 40% the increase in greatest transverse diameter of small abdominal aortic aneurysms over a 24-month period of observation in comparison to a placebo-treated control group.

Research Training in the Epidemiology of Aging

The objective of this program is to train pre- and post-doctoral students to conduct independent and original research in the epidemiology of aging, with an emphasis on the prevention of late-life disability and functional decline. The program emphasizes four broad substantive areas including: musculoskeletal epidemiology, neuroepidemiology, genetic epidemiology, and pharmacoepidemiology.

Community Ambulation Following Hip Fracture

This randomized controlled multi-center study will evaluate the effect of a 4 month, home delivered multi-component intervention on survival and the ability to ambulate independently in the community among older men and women who have sustained a hip fracture. The project also will investigate precursors to community ambulation and the cost effectiveness of delivering the program to this frail and disabled population of older persons.

Claude D. Pepper Older American Independence Center

The aims of the UM-OAIC are to: 1) conduct research that examines the mechanisms underlying the functional impairments associated with stroke, hip fracture, and prevalent chronic diseases in older people; 2) design novel, exercise and activity-based rehabilitation interventions that produce clinically relevant outcomes and study the mechanisms underlying them; 3) translate interventions developed in UM-OAIC clinical laboratories and in other clinical centers for implementation and rigorous evaluation in community settings; 4) support pilot and exploratory studies, development projects, and externally-funded projects that support the UM-OAIC mission; and 5) to foster the career development of junior faculty/scholars into independent, academic scientists with expertise in the study of older persons with disabling diseases through mentor-based, bench-to-bedside translational research training that includes didactic and experiential/practical-applied training in conducting independent, aging research.

Azithromycin to prevent BPD in Ureaplasma-infected Preterms

This study will 1) evaluate the safety of and how the body processes the antibiotic azithromycin, 2) determine the effectiveness of a 3-day course of azithromycin in eliminating Ureaplasma infection from the lungs of preterm infants, and 3) compare the lung health outcomes of the infants treated with azithromycin with the outcomes of placebo-treated infants.

Rehabilitation, NMES and High Protein to Reduce Post ICU Syndrome in the Elderly

This pilot study will determine whether or not there is evidence of beneficial treatment effects and feasibility of administering neuromuscular electrical stimulation or protein supplementation to elderly, intensive care unit patients to prevent weakness and loss of function experienced as a "Post ICU Syndrome”. Dr. Terrin will provide advice on clinical trial design, data collection and data analysis.
