Doctoral Programs
The University of Maryland, Baltimore offers the only doctoral degree program in epidemiology at a public institution in the Baltimore/Washington/Delaware region. The degree program allows the student to acquire advanced knowledge, skills and experience in completing independent epidemiological research in a biomedical setting.
PhD in Epidemiology
Our PhD degree has a strong quantitative focus, providing students with the tools needed to conduct world-class research on epidemiologic questions, and to participate as key members of the research team in a broad range of specialties. Students may choose from two tracks: Molecular Epidemiology or Health Informatics.
PhD in Molecular Epidemiology
The molecular track is designed for students who wish to undertake research that combines molecular, genetic, and epidemiologic techniques and to apply these techniques to the understanding of human health problems. Students in this track are provided with a solid knowledge base in epidemiology and biostatistics, while also gaining the laboratory and informatics skills needed to incorporate genomic data into their research.
University of Maryland System-Wide Program in Toxicology
The program offers students training opportunities in toxicology research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), University of Maryland College Park (UMCP), and the UMCES Chesapeake Biologic Laboratories at Solomons, MD. A training track in Forensic Toxicology is offered in coordination with the Maryland Medical Examiners Office
PhD in Gerontology
The Doctoral Program in Gerontology, at UMB and UMBC which enrolled its first students in fall 2001 provides an interdisciplinary and integrative perspective on the process of human aging and the experiences of growing old. Students concentrate in one of three tracks: epidemiology, policy, or social, cultural, and behavioral sciences. This is a research training program that acknowledges the complex, dynamic, and bi-directional relationship between individuals and the historical, political, economic, environmental, psychological, social, cultural and biological contexts in which aging occurs.
