Description

The Division of Environmental Epidemiology and Toxicology in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine is an academic unit that conducts research on the environmental and human health effects of chemicals, serves as a resource for chemical risk assessment issues, and provides graduate level training through the University of Maryland System-wide Graduate Program in Toxicology which is supported by an NIEHS Training Grant. Faculty members in the division and the graduate program have expertise in cellular mechanisms of metal ion toxicity, health effects of ambient air particles, regulatory toxicology, and aquatic pathology.

Primary research areas of faculty members in the Division of Environmental Epidemiology and Toxicology include the neurotoxicity of natural toxins and metals, cellular and molecular mechanisms of metal ion toxicity, health effects of ambient air particles, chemical risk assessment, and aquatic pathology. Faculty members also work closely with the University of Maryland Law School’s nationally-ranked Environmental Law Program on regulatory and policy issues pertaining to environmental chemical pollutants.

Graduate students and law students with interests in this area work closely together on local and national problems stemming from the ecological and human health impacts of hazardous chemicals.
