Research

The CVD conducts research in the following broad areas: bacterial diseases, parasitic diseases, viral diseases, novel delivery systems, combination vaccines and public health and policy. As a result of many of these endeavors, the CVD generates intellectual property that is available for licensing by commercial entities.

Clinical, Lab, Field Sites, Consulting Activities

Inpatient clinical studies are performed at the Center’s Research Isolation Ward. Outpatient clinical studies are conducted at the CVD’s outpatient facility in Baltimore, as well as at the University of Maryland, College Park, CVD - Chile (Santiago, Chile) and at various other sites around the world. Epidemiologic and vaccine testing projects take Center faculty and trainees to less developed countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. These projects include:

•  Malaria molecular epidemiology and vaccine clinical trials in Mali, Malawi and Venezuela.

•  Studies of diarrheal disease and typhoid fever in many countries.

•  Clinical trials of CVD 103-HgR live oral cholera vaccine in Thailand, Indonesia, Peru, Costa Rica and Chile.

 

 

Faculty and staff consult with international agencies and foundations such as the World Health Organization, Pan American Health Organization, Agency for International Development, World Bank and the Rockefeller Foundation, as well as with individual governments and pharmaceutical manufacturers.
