Secondary Appointments - Volunteer (Non-Tenure Track)

*Secondary appointments are only prefixed with "Adjunct" or "Clinical" if the primary appointment is prefixed with "Adjunct" or "Clinical".

*Secondary appointments are only awarded to faculty who hold a primary appointment within the School of Medicine or another UMB School or a System Institution (e.g., UMBC, College Park, etc.).

If primary appointment is within the School of Medicine:

  1. Read through the checklist (MS Word or PDF) before beginning to obtain materials for this appointment and continue to use as a working guideline.

  2. Ensure all of the criteria listed have been met before submitting the completed packet to the OAA.

  3. Be aware that faculty appointments above the rank of Instructor may take 2 to 4 weeks to complete, as they need to be reviewed by the School of Medicine Council and Dean.

If primary appointment is outside the School of Medicine, but within the University of Maryland System:

  1. Read through the checklist (MS Word or PDF) before beginning to obtain materials for this appointment and continue to use as a working guideline.

  2. Ensure all of the criteria listed have been met before submitting the completed packet to the OAA.

  3. Be aware that faculty appointments at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor may need to be reviewed by the Executive Committee, School of Medicine Council and Dean and therefore may take 4 to 6 weeks to complete.

  4. Be aware that faculty appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor may take 2 to 4 weeks to complete, as they need to be reviewed by the School of Medicine Council and Dean.

  5. Do not send 75 copies (double-sided) of the candidate’s CV until you are notified that the appointment recommendation is ready to be forwarded to the Executive Committee.
