Medical Family Day

Wojcik Family

Lesley Wojcik '09, celebrates with her family

Medical Family Day is an opportunity for Families to celebrate and appreciate medical education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and learn about the Medical Family Association. The first annual Medical Family Day was held on Thursday, November 17, 2005.

Medical Family Day includes the annual White Coat Ceremony, which started at the School of Medicine in 1997. The White Coat Ceremony involves the presentation of traditional white coats, long the symbol of physicians and scientists, to students. The coats are put on the students by School of Medicine faculty, to welcome their new colleagues to the profession of medicine. After being "coated," students recited an oath acknowledging their acceptance of the obligations of the medical profession.

In addition to the White Coat Ceremony, speakers provide inspiration and insight for students and families facing the challenge and excitment of medical school.

Medical families also enjoy presentations about cutting-edge education and research and have an opportuntity to talk to faculty, fellow students and family members.
